2025 Photography Goals
Cliché or not, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the atmosphere of new beginnings, resolutions, and changes that a new year brings - and that’s definitely what I’ve done. After a bit of reflecting, I thought I’d share five things related to photography that I’m looking to work on, improve, or generally get involved with in 2025.
coming soon(ish).Hopefully.
Recently I decided to commit to a rather hefty writing project, detailing fifty lessons I’ve learned in photography since picking up my first ever camera roughly at the end of 2015. As a form of accountability, and to give a flavour of what I hope this project will be (the thought of calling it a book at the moment makes me cringe slightly), I thought I’d share its opening. Enjoy.
ONE WEEK IN BANGKOK
Visiting Thailand often involves an extensive adventure to discover the country’s stunning beaches, idyllic towns, and peaceful vibes, so it could be said that this brief excursion of mine was something out of the ordinary. Despite visiting two years ago with friends, the aim of this trip was to spend more time with the camera than bottles of Chang - and the streets of the capital certainly made that task easier.
My Favourite places to photograph in 2023
Last year offered up a variety of photogenic locations with the earlier months marking the latter half of my extensive trip around Asia, with a few subsequent excursions occurring closer to home after adjusting back to life again in sunny old England. Whilst the places visited all had their charms in one way or another, there were a handful that offered a thoroughly memorable and enjoyable experience when it came to photography.
3 Days in Istanbul
With visions of bustling markets, narrow streets, and grand mosques, I recently took it upon myself to visit one of my most desired cities to photograph - Istanbul. The city once known as Constantinople certainly didn't disappoint either, providing plenty of opportunities to bust the camera out and take a variety of shots ranging from classic street scenes to wider cinematic shots across the river and beyond.
Why Street Photography Is The Best (From Somebody Who Isn’t A Street Photographer)
Street photography is an ever growing genre, aligned with the increase generally of photography as a creative pursuit. In this blog post I’ve taken a deep dive into why that is; from the creative process to the end result.
INSTAGRAM ISN’T EVERYTHING. DON’T LET IT GET YOU DOWN
Despite recent changes, photography and Instagram are still as synonymous as ever. With many now focused on growing their following with this deemed to be the biggest marker of success, I’ve dissected the elements associated with this supposed ‘growth’, and highlighted how they might not be all they’re cracked up to be - especially if we’re seeking to be authentic photographers.
5 things I Would tell any beginner photographer
Starting out in photography can be slightly daunting as well as confusing. Not only do you have to work out how your camera works, but then how to use it in order to capture photos similar to the ones that inspired you in the first place. In this post I’ll be running through several of the lessons I wish I’d learned earlier on my photography journey, in the hope they can speed up your progress in the field.
Lisbon: A Photography Review
The city of Lisbon has seen a recent rise in its popularity as a photography location, and I simply had to check it out. Read on to find out how it surpassed my expectations, as well as a few handy hints if you’re thinking of heading to the Portuguese capital with your camera.
THE BIGGEST (TRAVEL) PHOTOGRAPHY LESSON I’VE LEARNED THIS YEAR
After travelling around Asia for 6 months, my photography skills had definitely improved. Partly due to constant practice, but also due to learning several important lessons that would help define my approach the craft. Some were difficult to put into words, but the biggest can be found in this blog post.
THE PROBLEM WITH DRONE PHOTOGRAPHY
With drones as powerful as they are today, and the photos taken from them almost always being met with fascination and praise, in true cynical style I’ve confronted the few problems this causes for those with a passion for photography.
WIX vs SQUARESPACE: WHY I MOVED
In this post I’ll outline why I feel working with and on the Squarespace platform is more advantageous than the former for someone like myself. Nevertheless, it’s important that I emphasise this is not necessarily a comprehensive review of both systems but rather an evaluation of my experiences with the two.
The Redesign
After a period of reflection a few months back, I made the decision to reshift the focus of my website and ultimately start afresh when it came to design as well as content. With restrictions continuing to affect how and where we travel to my predominant emphasis on the sights of the globe clearly wasn’t sustainable project-wise, nor was it for my creative curiosity.
Presets: What to Buy & The Paradox of Choice
The market for presets is now a vast one, with creators offering shortcuts to their style as a means to provide a form of passive income for themselves. With the growing prominence of preset selling I felt the need to offer a few words of advice before anyone parts with their money, as well as highlighting the damage that can be caused by an over reliance on these files.
Working With What You've Got: Creation & The Impact of Envy
With the culture around photography and videography growing leaps and bounds in the last few years, the role and impact of technology within these fields has increased considerably too. In this post I wanted to analyse its effect on the creative process, and provide a reminder that it’s okay to not have the latest and best equipment money can buy.
Philippines Itinerary
Having spent two a fortnight in the archipelagic country of the Phillipines, I had the urge to document my experience and condense it into this short guide. Here I set out what a typical two-week itinerary might look like, with a few tips and warnings along the way.
Lightroom Workflow with my Most Used Preset
For a while I have been using one particular preset when editing Lightroom to provide a base look that desaturates colours in order to create more of a moody look. With this workflow I wanted to show how useful this preset is, yet simultaneously convey how the editing process is more than one simple click.
Reviewed: Smallrig a6300
Smallrig are one of the market leaders when it comes to DIY rigs for DSLR and Mirrorless cameras, so it felt right to put their a6300 model to the test. Whilst it can fit a multitude of accessories, I wanted to see how appropriate it is for the casual photographer.
